High Levels of Cesium Found in Garbage Ash in Eastern Japan
The eastern Japan city of Kashiwa said Monday high levels of radioactive cesium have been found in ash from garbage disposal facilities in the Chiba prefecture city.
The Kashiwa municipal government detected 365 to 70,800 becquerels of cesium per kilogram in radiation checks conducted at two incineration plants and one final disposal facility between late June to early July.
Kashiwa keeps ash containing 8,000 becquerels per kilogram or more of radioactive materials in temporary storage, rather than using it for landfill, based on Environment Ministry guidelines. If the amount of contaminated ash keeps increasing, the city’s garbage collection could be affected.

In a speech before the of economic experts at the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian prime minister had the following to say: “Thank God, or unfortunately, we do not print a reserve currency but what are they doing? Stop Obama’s Egyptian Tank Sale
While everyone in Washington was concentrating on the debt crisis this week, the Obama administration attempted to slip through a questionable arms deal that requires serious scrutiny. Though it got little attention, the Defense Department officially notified Congress on Friday that it was authorizing the sale of 125 M1A1 tanks to Egypt as well as other weapons, equipment, parts, training and logistical support. While most of the military sales to Egypt have sailed through without objection in the more than 30 years since it signed a peace deal with Israel, this is the first such sale since the fall of the Mubarak regime earlier this year. Which is exactly why the sale ought to be held up until the unsettled situation in the most populous country in the Arab world is better understood.
Congress has 30 days to register its formal objections to the proposed sale. That it should do so is imperative. The reasons for a delay are not complicated.
In the wake of Mubarak’s fall from power, the Egyptian military seems to have retained a firm grip on power. But the army seems intent on sharing power with a resurgent Muslim Brotherhood movement that threatens the foundation of the relationship between the United States and Egypt. Since the 1979 Camp David Accords, the Egyptian military has gotten all the high-tech and expensive equipment it wanted so long as it was clear their new toys would not be used to threaten or attack Israel. But as Egypt lurches toward the election of a new government that will probably be made up of Islamist elements, that peace is in jeopardy.

Assailants try to enter French embassy in Syria
French embassy guards fired live ammunition on Monday to prevent a crowd from storming France’s main diplomatic mission in Syria, in what the foreign ministry described as a “blatant” violation of international laws.
Syrian security forces were doing nothing to stop the incidents, which were recurring, a ministry official added.
“(France) reminds (Syria) that it is not with such illegal methods that the authorities in Damascus will turn the attention away from the fundamental problem, which is to stop the repression of the Syrian population and to launch democratic reform,” foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said.

Corps Warns Of Possible Heavy Rainfall In Upper Basin
The Corps of Engineers is maintaining record releases at both Fort Randall Dam in Pickstown and Gavins Point Dam in Yankton amidst a forecast calling for as much as 3 inches of rainfall in the Missouri River basin.
Fort Randall will remain at 156,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) and 160,000 cfs at Gavins Point, said Jody Farhat with the water management office in Omaha.
“The reservoirs, especially at Oahe and Fort Randall, are so close to the crest that we have very limited flexibility with releases downstream,” she said.
Summer floods threaten record levels as rain predicted
“There is nowhere for any additional water to go,” Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s NWS Jack Hayes said in the NOAA statement. “While unusual for this time of year, all signs point to the flood threat continuing.”
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Service has forecasted above-average rain in already-vulnerable areas of the upper Midwest and Northern Plans in the next two weeks, and for much of the region in monthly outlooks.
Rising temperatures over the Rockies will add to the flood threat, releasing water from the remaining snowpack.

America’s energy-rich western states stretching from North Dakota and Montana on the Canadian border to New Mexico on the Southern border can produce enough oil and natural gas to replace what America presently imports from Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Columbia, Algeria, Iraq, Russia, Venzuela, and Kuwait, according to a new study conducted for the Western Energy Alliance.
The study was conducted for the alliance by EIS, with data analysis provided by ICF.
According to the study’s executive summary, the western states can produce as much as 1.3 million barrels of oil per day by 2020, and 6.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas annually by the same year.
A crisis worth worrying about: Bacon prices are about to skyrocket

After months of liberals crying the deficit is falling, the public still is not buying it.
Boehner Sticking To His Guns: “Americans Need Jobs, Not Tax Hikes”
So far, John Boehner is sticking to his guns in the budget talks, rejecting out of hand, Obama’s One trillion tax hike “deal” – which only makes sense because as JE Dyer notes at Hot Air; it’s the Democrats who occupy the indefensible ground.
Essentially, their position is that if Republicans won’t agree to raising the debt ceiling and raising taxes, the president will use his discretion to default on US government debt after 2 August. They don’t put it that way, of course, but that’s the reality. If Obama defaults on government debt, it will be because he decided to, not because he had to. He could be impeached for making such a decision.
Boehner: “Excuse us for trying to lead”
The debt discussions led to an interesting exchange, as reported by Jake Tapper of ABC News:
Boehner said at one point that “it’s clear to all of us how big this spending problem is. Congress keeps voting for programs we can’t pay for. But look, entitlement cuts aren’t easy for us to vote for either. Our guys aren’t cheerleading about cutting entitlements.”
“Your guys already voted for them,” the president said, referring to the budget offered by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wisc.
“Excuse us for trying to lead,” Boehner said.
Eat your peas, Barry. Tear off that Band-Aid and eat your peas.
No big budget deal? Blame Obama, not Boehner
In short, Obama sees a need for a permanently bigger government and a lot more tax revenue to fund it. Had Obama agreed with his own debt commission and Republicans, a big agreement was possible. Or he could have proposed real reforms to entitlements. But he declined and there wasn’t a mega-deal. Don’t blame Boehner for that.
Will Boehner pull a ‘Reagan at Reykjavik’ and walk?
Obama says he wants a big deal, maybe because he needs an economic win to counter the faltering economic recovery and deprive the GOP of the “big spender” line of attack in 2012. Maybe he is finally listening to Tim Geithner and Jack Lew. It all reminds me of President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at the 1986 arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. Reagan walked away from a deal that would have eliminated nuclear ICBM’s in a decade because it would hobbled research into the Strategic Defense Initiative. Reagan was right to walk away then, and Boehner would be right to do the same now.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) offered his strongest criticism yet of President Barack Obama’s leadership in the ongoing talks.
“I have little question that as long as this President is in the Oval Office, a real solution is unattainable,” he said on the Senate floor Tuesday. Adding, “This was not an easy decision for me.”
Obama, he said, “has presented us with three choices: smoke and mirrors, tax hikes or default. Republicans choose none of the above.”
McConnell added the Democratic budget plan would provide only “a couple of billion dollars in cuts up front with empty promises of more to follow.”

Regardless of what happens with the debt ceiling deal, if Social Security checks don’t get sent out next month, it will be the decision of the Obama administration to not put Social Security toward the top of their list of priorities (I thought it was the GOP who wanted to starve seniors and push them off cliffs).
Hopefully Social Security recipients are familiar with chess, because they’re now officially pawns in the president’s debt ceiling game.

“That’s fear mongering that’s not leadership, that’s sad and pathetic,” West told reporters. “There’s revenue that’s coming into this country the president needs to prioritize.”
Here’s the thing about entitlements: you spent yours. There’s literally no money in Medicare and Social Security. And why? Because the last two generations elected people who spent all of it on other programs, programs most constituents were more than happy about. Welfare. Spending on schools. Subsidies for an infinite number of pet programs. Bridges to nowhere. Ad nauseum. News flash. Now the money’s gone.
Why does the government think it can operate in an alternate reality? This is like a lesson you’d teach to a four year old. Now Bobby, you can spend your dollar on that toy car. But if you spend it now you can’t get the stuffed bear you wanted. There’s a whole army of financial advisors whose jobs are making sure you save enough money for retirement. Why? Tribe smacks Geithner twice over debt limit posturing
It is pretty clear now that Geithner only floated the 14th Amendment option as a lame attempt to provide Obama with more leverage at the negotiating table. But the idea, as Tribe clearly lays out in his op-ed, was always preposterous. Still, the episode does demonstrate how fast Turbo Tax Tim is willing to play with the facts surrounding the debt limit debate. Republicans would be wise to take nothing Geithner says at face value.

The President repeats that both parties must abandon their sacred cows in budget negotiations. Republicans, he argues, will have to agree to tax increases as part of a deficit reduction package. Republicans are being characterized as intransigent and extreme for refusing to do so.

As if “complaining about the government” is distracting business owners from the hiring or growing their companies that they’d otherwise be doing. Good lord…

Immelt said he is committed to working with Obama on other moves that can help hiring, and that he expects to have proposals by the end of the year that should help to create up to 1 million jobs.

The low job growth in the U.S. isn’t a “soft patch,” it’s a sea of quicksand. In a nutshell, here’s the situation: 2/3 or more of all job growth comes from small businesses starting up and expanding; only a third or less of new jobs come from Corporate America or government expansion. As recent reports have shown, Corporate America has been on a hiring spree–overseas. From the point of view of globalized Corporate America, why hire anyone in a slow-growth market like the U.S.? It makes sense to hire new employees in fast-growing markets where the corporation is reaping its growth and most of its profits. As for government hiring: the game of expansion based on explosively rising debt or Federal stimulus spending is over. To live within their means, local government and related agencies will have to shed jobs, as labor accounts for 80% of government expenses. That leaves any future expansion of jobs up to small business. But small business isn’t hiring, and won’t be hiring, for these structural reasons…

There was nothing to smile about in today’s May JOLTS release from the BLS. Those expecting a pick up in job openings (traditionally the key requirement for an sustained increase in NFP) will have to wait some more, after the May number came at 3.0 million, the same as April. This is modestly better than the all time low of 2.1 million in July 2009, but is a far cry from the 4.4 million when the Depression started. And while there was no good news in Job Openings, there was some bad news in Total Separations which increased by over 200K sequentially from 3.833 MM to 4.059 MM. And for the first time since late 2010, the separations rates (defined to include voluntary quits, involuntary layoffs and discharges) rose to 3.1%, the same as the hires rate. Should the separations rate (especially if driven by involuntary departures) surpass the hires rate it will likely portend another period of NFP weakness ahead.
What is most surprising is that contrary to conventional wisdom, the voluntary quits level among government workers increased from 38% to 41% of total, while the layoffs and discharges level dropped from 44% to 38%, which means that government workers were not “let go” – they left voluntarily. This throws a bit of a wrench in generic interpretations of the surge in the government component of the unemployment rate. What is worse is that the quits rate in the Private employment stayed flat at 50%, while the layoff and discharges rate increased from 42% to 44%. Ironically, it is Private workers who are getting fired more, while it is government workers who are quitting voluntarily.

The Webb Telescope was canceled, which was probably necessary given how out of control it was, but Commercial Crew and space technologies were severely chopped back as well, putting off further the day that we will no longer be reliant on the Russians for ISS, and that we can start moving humans beyond LEO. Instead, the Senate Launch System and Orion-by-another-name earmarks were actually increased, though there is still insufficient funds to build them in any timely manner, and no missions described or funded for them.

Does The US Government Want To Prevent You From Leaving?
In the US, the government now requires all citizens to have a passport in order to pass the border, even when driving into Mexico or Canada. Obtaining a passport, however, is neither free nor guaranteed. You must apply, pay an ever-increasing fee, and wait for weeks to be approved and receive it. Naturally, the privacy statement on the application also acknowledges that the responses can be shared with other departments in the government, including Homeland Security. If this proposal passes, then US citizens will have a nearly insurmountable hurdle to obtain a passport and be able to leave the country at will. ACORN is the largest radical leftist group in America today.

And, ACORN even canvassed for Obama in 2008.In 2009 Obama promoted a top ACORN operative, Patrick Gaspard, who’s oranization was fined $775,000 for election violations, to a top post in the White House. Gespard is helping shape domestic policy today.
Obama’s ACORN group was banned from receiving federal funds in September after the group was busted on tape promoting the child sex slave trade.

Here’s what we know: Through Operation Fast and Furious, and Operation Castaway, the Obama administration has been arming drug cartels with AK 47s and other high powered weapons. The drug gangs have in turn been wreaking havoc all along the border – we’ve been hearing alarming tales of death and destruction for the past two years: Stories that include daytime shootings on busy streets, massacres inside bars, grisly mutilations and beheadings.

Some of the estimated 2,000 firearms that federal law enforcement allowed to slip into the hands of Mexico’s violent drug cartels are showing up in gun crimes in U.S. cities.
KNXV-TV in Phoenix, AZ, conducted an investigation regarding weapons the federal government “walked” to drug cartels, and can confirm that those weapons are turning up at crime scenes inside the United States — some scenes just blocks from each other.
They have documentation proving that “Gunwalker” firearms are turning up in Arizona gun crimes, and that some of the firearms in question may not have ever left the United States at all.

The Justice Department’s “Operation Fast and Furious” supplied more than 2,000 military-grade weapons — many of them purchased with taxpayer dollars by government informants — to the Mexican drug cartels. Among the weapons purchased for the cartels by the American people: Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifles, AK-47 assault rifles, and FN assault pistols. Put simply, Eric Holder, probably under the direction of President Obama, was building a case for more gun control laws by shipping military-grade weapons to the cartels.

But now it’s being used to score cheap political points for those on the far right. This week, the House will be voting on the “BULB Act” a bill to repeal the bipartisan energy efficiency standards that have helped create jobs here in America and save energy and money for families. This is as common sense as it gets and it’s hard to believe that we’re fighting over it. I urge my colleagues to join me in opposing this bill.
Of course, Mike forgets to mention all the incandescent bulb manufacturing plants that closed in America, thanks to the legislation. And, as China geared up to build CFLs, they built many more coal-fired energy plants, so, any supposed globull warming benefits that come from restricting the sale of certain incandescent bulbs is lost from those plants, and, face it, that’s what the “not a ban” was all about.

Savings and investment just adds to wealth, and wealth is anti-social under a social justice regime of equal wealth for all. Indeed, the only rational strategy for everyone under such a regime is to consume all income and not save or invest anything. For anyone who saves and invests more than others will see that savings and investment expropriated, and anyone who saves and invests less than others will be rewarded with a grant from the government to make their savings equal to all others.
The only difference between the prosperity of modern industrial society and the subsistence living of cavemen is savings and investment. All the tools and equipment that enable us to produce more than what was enjoyed during caveman days come from investment, made possible by savings.

Now, I don’t know about you, but saying that millions of residents should just leave the state if they don’t like California’s liberal laws, dysfunctional finances and horrendous business climate doesn’t really disprove the point that the Sacramento elite really and truly do not care about the Republican-leaning parts of the state or the people in them. California’s unemployment rate is 11.7% compared to 9.1% for the nation as a whole (given California’s size, I’d guess without doing the math that means the rest of the country may be as much as a full three points below CA). Even the NY Times says California’s budget crisis may be the worst in the nation, with a $26.6 billion budget deficit comprising nearly a third of the state’s budget. California owes $2,362 in debt per resident of the state, and pays a 20% premium to borrow money compared to better-run states; its A- credit rating from Standard & Poor’s is the worst in the nation. A recent budget deal only barely convinced S&P to avoid an immediate further downgrade, and S&P is still concerned that the deal doesn’t solve the state’s long-term “backlog of budget obligations accumulated during the past decade”.
Gov. Brown’s office may think that’s a record to get cocky about, but maybe it’s time California showed a little humility about the failures of its political culture and business climate, and learned a few things from its more conservative neighbors – and maybe even from some of its own citizens.

The tax hit is just the latest in a string of unforeseen consequences from what has turned into one of the worst professional sports deals ever struck by a local government—soaking up unprecedented tax dollars and county resources while returning little economic benefit.
With a combined estimated cost of $540 million, the stadiums—one for football’s Bengals, the other for baseball’s Reds—were touted by the teams and county officials as a way to generate cash and jobs. The Bengals, who had threatened to relocate if they didn’t secure a new home, drove negotiations. And it is that deal—the more lucrative arrangement struck with the teams—that has fanned the county’s current struggles.

The light fixture fiasco underscores a culture of secrecy among the engineers who maintain the $22 billion Big Dig, one of the world’s most costly – and problem-plagued – highway projects. After years of scandals, bad press, and lawsuits alleging shoddy work, engineers freely admit they don’t like to write things down, prompting one transportation consultant to compare the atmosphere to President Nixon’s White House.
The consultant, C. David Taugher, wrote in a March internal report, “How deep does the culture go where nobody says anything, even when they know they should?’’Again, where are the feds in this case? Could you imagine such a costly project in a red state becoming one of the most massive boondoggles in history and nobody being held accountable?
Talk about a culture of corruption.
But Horace Small, executive director the Union of Minority Neighborhoods, an advocacy group in Jamaica Plain, countered, “I understand that the black community has been decimated by double-digit unemployment, but we should not settle for just any jobs.”
So clowns like Small, and on a larger scale, the clown Mayor Mumbles Menino would prefer people to not have jobs because of some stupid ideological opposition to Wal-Mart. Seriously, what is their problem? They’d rather pay more for merchandise? They’d prefer residents to just sit around and collect welfare?

In Dudley Square, Roxbury resident Monique Henderson said a Wal-Mart would be a boost to the neighborhood. “It would be nice to have it here,” she said. “There are lots of people looking for jobs so that would help out.”

They have also become a tool exploited by defense lawyers who often seek footage from the cameras to exonerate falsely accused clients. The footage is not monitored in real time, but can be reviewed upon request by attorneys, police and prosecutors.
Nearly one-third of 109 requests for footage made last year came from defense attorneys, according to data supplied by The City in response to a public records request by The San Francisco Examiner.

She can’t possibly be taken seriously as a presidential contender dressed like that, especially since this is the second time she has graced Newsweek in a less-than-presidential pose.
The first time Palin was on the cover, Newsweek swiped the photo from Runner’s World — so Palin didn’t pose for that photo, they just took it from another source.
But I’m willing to bet that Capehart didn’t say the following people “can’t possibly be taken seriously as a presidential contender dressed like that”
Let’s not forget how this all happened – government intervention at the behest of liberals. I have posted on this many times before, but here is the approximate sequence of events:
- The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) of 1977 is passed under Carter with pressure from groups like ACORN. It prohibits the practice of redlining – giving fewer loans to poor areas.
- Sometime in the early 1990s home loan data was required to collect racial statistical data, used later to make the false case that minorities were being discriminated against in the loan market.
- In 1995, Bill Clinton gave the CRA teeth. By the force of government, subprime loans were authorized specifically so that lower income minorities could buy homes without meeting the usual requirements.
- Late in Clinton’s second term he signed the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 that unleashed the GSEs of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac began buying subprime notes giving rise to entities like Countrywide that specialized in the practice. Fannie and Freddie became bloated with bad loans, went bankrupt leading to the mortgage meltdown of 2008. The rest, as they say, is history.
An aside to the story is that Bush tried to reform Fannie and Freddie in 2002 to prevent exactly what was to happen in 2008, but was blocked by Congress in 2003. Of course, the MSM ignores that inconvenient little nugget from history.My guess is that Obama knows exactly why the housing market melted down, but is instead pushing the Wall Street – eeeeevil! meme because he knows it’s an easy story for the MSM to run with and spoon-feed to a gullible public that will readily eat it up.
