The result has been a foreign-policy debacle. The president has alienated everybody: not only Mubarak’s cronies in the military, but also the youthful crowds in the streets of Cairo. Whoever ultimately wins, Obama loses. And the alienation doesn’t end there. America’s two closest friends in the region—Israel and Saudi Arabia—are both disgusted. The Saudis, who dread all manifestations of revolution, are appalled at Washington’s failure to resolutely prop up Mubarak. The Israelis, meanwhile, are dismayed by the administration’s apparent cluelessness.

Egypt? On my top five of regimes I want the US to undermine, Egypt places… not on the list. I suppose in an expanded list it would come somewhere between The Netherlands and one of those made-up countries in tv shows, like East Pretendistan.
But even assuming we wished for this to happen (and, um, we didn’t), did Obama have a damn thing to do with it?
We know that Bush actually put money into liberalizing Egypt, and Obama not only slashed that funding, but he put a stricture on the funding that it could only flow to groups specifically approved of by the Eygptian government.
It seems when it comes to even soft power, Obama’s against it — he’s not only willing to do business with dictators, he’s positively giddy at the prospect.

I like to compare high food prices to high blood pressure in an individual — a kind of silent killer, until it’s no longer silent.
A great famine in 1788 led to the French Revolution. The Tunisia and Egypt revolutions began as food riots. When a man can’t feed himself and his family, he will not sit quietly.
From Korea to Egypt, and around the rest of the world, the greatest threat to world stability today is the continual surge in food prices. Unless food prices fall this year, which nobody is predicting as far as I know, the world could be a different place by the end of the year.
Companies Warn That Higher Prices Are Looming
By the fall, people will most likely be paying more for each of them, as rising prices hit most consumer goods, say retailers, food companies and manufacturers of consumer products.
Cotton prices are near their highest level in more than a decade, after adjusting for inflation, and leather and polyester costs are jumping as well. Copper recently hit its highest level in about 40 years, and iron ore, used for steel, is fetching extremely high prices. Prices for corn, sugar, wheat, beef, pork and coffee are soaring. Labor overseas is becoming more expensive, meanwhile, and so are the utility bills to keep a factory running.
Precious Metals Surge Immediately On Higher Than Expected UK Inflation
Silver and particularly gold rose sharply on the release of the higher than expected UK inflation data. It showed that UK inflation quickened to 26 month highs at 4.0%. Currency debasement and higher food and energy prices are leading to an inflation surge in both developed and emerging markets. The Chinese inflation data appears to be even more misleading and manipulated than that in western economies. Many governments are attempting to manage consumers perceptions regarding the significant increase in the cost of living as fiat currencies are debased. Silver is now less than 2% from its 30 year nominal high of $31.25/oz seen at the start of the year and looks set to challenge and surpass this level in the coming days due to continued robust physical demand (both investment and industrial) and the fact that the futures market is seeing some big money go long again after the recent correction. Silver remains in backwardation with spot trading at $30.68/oz while the July 11 contract trades at $30.55/oz and the December 14 at $30.40/oz.
Coming into an environment where the most-recent stimulative tax cuts didn’t stimulate, this is likely to bring us some interesting economic releases. My expectations are for serious profit declines which should become apparently in the first quarter reports and lead to a full-on profit collapse by the end of 2011. Exactly how long the markets will ignore these realities is difficult to determine, but I will say this: If you’ve made some nice money in the stock market on the back of so-called recovery, your “use by” date has expired and in my view you’re now living on borrowed time.
China CPI 4.9%, PPI 6.6%, Money Supply Up 53% in Two Years
The latest numbers show inflation is soaring out of control in China. The CPI is up 4.9% year-over-year, up from 4.6% in December. The PPI clocked in at 6.6% compared with 5.9% last month.
Things are even worse than they appear at first glance because China manipulated its CPI basket to reduce the impact of soaring food prices. Thus, China’s CPI numbers are not directly comparable to previous months.

The wheels fall off the global “recovery,” the emerging market equity bubbles, oil, China’s equities and its property bubble, and most if not all commodities. Gold and silver swoon as per late 2008 as raising cash become paramount. Oil retraces to the $40/barrel level, and then drops further as exporters ramp up their exports to generate desperately needed cash. Interest rates rise sharply, risk assets tank, borrowing dries up, housing prices “slip” to new lows (the stick-slip phenomenon), and the hated/loathed U.S. dollar confounds almost everyone by breaking out of technical resistance levels. Civil disorder spreads along with recession and lower energy prices, which devastate oil exporters’ primary source of government revenues. With better grain harvests stemming from improved weather, declining meat consumption in 2012 due to recession and the implosion of the market for corn ethanol, grain prices plummet, wiping out all the speculators who reckoned 2010 had set the trend for the decade. All of this starts slowly in Q3 2011 but gathers momentum in 2012.

I have previously recommended something like the following concerning pirates: tell the lawyers to go home, find the pirates, line them up on the deck of the ship, and shoot each and every one of them. Of course, this seems brutal and uncivilized to many. Indeed it is. But value judgments have a way of being nuanced, difficult things that eventually turn on you and create unintended consequences. My recommendation is brutal, but consider the alternatives. Hostages continue to be taken, ransoms are paid, lives are lost in a continual drip and drain of violence in the Gulf of Aden, and – perhaps best of all – yes, the world funds Islamic militancy with the ransoms.

Unless politicians get serious about deficit reduction right now–not seven years in the future–they’re going to tax-cut-and-spend us straight into the poorhouse.
This was supposed to be the moment we were all waiting for. After three years of historic deficits that have added almost $4.5 trillion to the national debt, President Obama was finally going to get serious about fiscal discipline. Instead, what landed on Congress’s doorstep on Monday was a White House budget that increases deficits above the spending baseline for the next two years. Hosni Mubarak was more in touch with reality last Thursday night.

Military Voting Accountability Starts Today
Tom Perez is tasked today with the unenviable job of putting lipstick on the DOJ’s military voting pig. No doubt he’ll talk about the Department’s “aggressive enforcement” and multiple lawsuits. Thankfully, we can count on Eric Eversole to tell Congress how the Justice Department blessed a plan for Maryland to send ballots overseas that omitted state contests, like the one between Governor Martin O’Malley and Republican challenger Bob Ehrlich.
I have learned through multiple sources with direct knowledge that the Perez- and Julie Fernandes-run Voting Section advised states that it would be acceptable under federal law to omit down-ballot state contests and only give servicemembers overseas the right to vote in federal contests.
