It’s funny because people in New York think that all of us in ‘flyover country’ are nothing but a bunch of dumb hicks and ‘bitter Klingons’. I have been through two hurricanes, numerous floods including one that inundated most of downtown and the hospitals with up to 10 feet of water. We did not have the problems we have seen out of out of cities like New Orleans during Katrina or New York City. Why? Competent state government working closely with competent local governments that don’t sit around and wait for the feds to help them, no unions, and a populace combined with the religious and business communities that understands that in times like that you have to get out and help your neighbors and work in a coordinated effort with the state/local governments to get help to where it is most needed.

Public employee unions flourish because government is, by its nature, a monopoly. Thus, there is no need for unionized government units to compete against non-unionized units. Moreover, public officials who negotiate with public employee unions generally lack the same incentives that private employers have to keep costs down. The result has been a fiscal disaster, with numerous states and municipalities now going over the waterfall of bankruptcy.

And once ingested, mercury tends to go to the brain and stay there.

Thus we are learning of the death of thousands of livestock, with many more facing starvation, after a blizzard brought heavy snow to a county in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Wednesday night. The snow, with falls of over three feet in places, has stopped animals grazing and the county does not have enough stored winter feed. It is currently short of 21.5 million kg of hay and other stored winter feed. And, with roads to five townships blocked, affecting 4,928 people and 248,000 livestock, things are not set to get better in a hurry.
All this is happening on top of the US blizzards and it is not yet January.
